Prospective Members
The Cardozo Law Review invites members based on Unified Writing Competition scores, class rank, and personal statements. The Law Review commits to inviting the greater of fifteen percent of the first-year class or forty first-year students every year. Rising 3Ls and transfer students may apply for consideration in a separate Summer Writing Competition.
Unified Writing Competition
At the end of each academic year, the incoming Law Review board administers the Unified Writing Competition testing each students’ abilities to write legal arguments, edit, and format citations according to the Bluebook. Participation in the Unified Writing Competition is required for all prospective members.
Grades
Ten percent of Law Review invitations will be given to students who (i) hold the top grade point averages in the first-year class, and (ii) score in the fiftieth percentile or above of the Unified Writing Competition. Class rank will be used as determining factor for all other students.
Personal Statements
The Cardozo Law Review is committed to representing a diversity of perspectives, and to being an inclusive journal. We believe that diversity significantly contributes to the quality of our work. As such, everyone who seeks to the join the journal must submit a personal statement of no more than five-hundred words. The personal statement prompt encourages students to write about any subject or content matter, including but not limited to: unique experiences, such as challenges or obstacles that may have shaped your growth; interests that may serve as potential Note topics; or research and academic experiences that have impacted your life.
Equity and Inclusion Committee
Given the journal’s commitment to diversity, the journal will allocate fourteen percent of its invitations for students holistically reviewed by the Equity and Inclusion Committee on the basis of their Unified Writing Competition scores, class rank, and personal statement. The Committee consists of four elected students, the Managing Editor, and the Editor-in-Chief. A professor or administrator will join the Committee for the special purpose of allocating these invitations.
